  SYLLABUS                                                       

       1.      Couse description

  Introduction to Solid State Lighting is a degree program for undergraduate students of College of Physical Science and Technology, Yangzhou University. It is about light-emitting semiconductor materials and devices for energy-saving applications, including: fundamental theory of semiconductor luminescence; classification and features of semiconductor light-emitting materials; principles, design and fabrication of semiconductor light-emitting devices; current status and research progress on semiconductor light-emitting materials and devices. The aim of this course is to provide systematical knowledge, current status and perspective of various semiconductor light-emitting materials and devices.

3.      Course Goals and Purpose

·         To know about the development history of solid state lighting technologies.

·         To get insight in the extraction of light from semiconductor chips.

·         To master the basic theory of semiconductor light-emitting materials and devices.

·         To be familiar with the preparation technology and testing methods of LEDs.

·         To learn about the white and UV LEDs, and new applications of solid state lighting.

4.      Grading

·         Homework and Attendance 20%

·         Quiz 20%

·         Final Exam 60%

5.      Scale used

           A = 100-90%, B = 89-80%, C = 79-70%, D = 69-60%, F = below 60%.  The instructor reserves the right in deciding borderline grades.
